Radiator not heating up? Causes, checks and fixes
If one of your radiators is stubbornly cold while the rest of your heating seems fine, it is usually a sign of a local issue rather than a full boiler breakdown. With a few simple checks, you can often work out what is going on and, in some cases, fix it yourself safely.
Safety notes before you start
Central heating systems involve hot water, pressure and, in the case of gas boilers, combustion. It is important to stay safe and know when to stop and call a professional.
Never remove boiler casings, touch internal boiler parts or alter any sealed components. Anything involving gas supply, burner adjustment or flue work must be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Stop immediately if you are unsure what you are looking at or feel out of your depth
If you smell gas, your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you see water pouring from pipework or the boiler, treat it as urgent and contact a professional right away.
Initial checks when one radiator is not heating
Start with the basics. Check the radiator valves on both sides are fully open. One side will usually have a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) or manual control, and the other will have a lockshield valve, often with a plastic cap.
Make sure the heating is on and the room thermostat is calling for heat. Give the system 15 to 20 minutes to warm up, then feel the pipes on each side of the problem radiator to see what is hot and what is not.
Feeling for hot feed and cool return
Carefully touch the pipe going into one side of the radiator, then the other. Take care, as they may be very hot. You are trying to work out whether hot water is reaching the radiator and returning properly.
If both pipes are stone cold while other radiators are hot, it points to a closed valve, stuck TRV pin, or circulation issue on that branch. If one pipe is hot and the other is cold, the hot water is arriving but not flowing through the radiator.
Trapped air and how to bleed a radiator safely
Air rising to the top of the system is one of the most common reasons for a radiator that is warm at the bottom but cold at the top. The air collects in the highest parts and prevents hot water from filling the radiator fully.
To bleed a radiator, you will need a radiator key and a cloth. Turn the heating off first so water is not being pumped around while you work.
Place the cloth under the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator. Insert the key and turn it slowly anticlockwise until you hear a hiss of air. Keep it open until a steady stream of water appears, then tighten it back up gently.
After bleeding, check your boiler pressure gauge. If the pressure has dropped below the recommended range, you may need to top it up using the filling loop. If you have to bleed radiators frequently, there may be an underlying issue that needs professional attention.
Why is my radiator cold at the top?
If your radiator is hot at the bottom but cold or cool at the top, trapped air is the most likely cause and bleeding usually helps. If bleeding does not improve things, there might be sludge build-up or circulation problems instead.
In that case, avoid repeatedly bleeding the radiator and speak to a heating engineer to investigate further. Repeated air in the system can hint at corrosion or a small leak somewhere in the pipework.
Stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) pin
A very common reason for one radiator staying cold is a stuck TRV pin. Inside the valve body is a small metal pin that moves up and down to open or close the flow of hot water. After long periods turned off, that pin can seize in the closed position.
First, remove the TRV head. Usually this is held in place by a knurled ring or a small screw. With the head removed, you will see the small pin in the centre of the valve body.
Gently press the pin up and down with your finger or the blunt end of a tool. It should move in and spring back out. If it is stuck, careful repeated pressing can often free it. Do not pull the pin out or hit it, as that can damage the valve.
Once it is moving freely, refit the TRV head, set it to a higher number and turn the heating back on to see if the radiator now heats up evenly.
Sludge and dirty system issues
If a radiator is cold at the bottom and warmer at the top, or has uneven hot and cold patches, it could be suffering from sludge build-up. Sludge is caused by corrosion inside the radiators and pipes, and it settles in low points, blocking the flow of water.
Over time, this can reduce the efficiency of your heating and strain the pump and boiler. Radiators affected by sludge are often slow to heat and may make gurgling or trickling noises.
A professional system clean or powerflush can remove sludge and restore proper circulation. This involves connecting specialist equipment to the system and flushing each radiator in turn with cleaning chemicals and high flow rates.
It is not something most homeowners should attempt themselves, but it is worth asking a heating engineer about if you notice several radiators with similar symptoms.
Balancing the system and circulation problems
Sometimes the issue is that certain radiators, often those closest to the boiler, are taking most of the flow, leaving others lukewarm or cold. Balancing the system by adjusting the lockshield valves helps ensure an even share of hot water.
Balancing involves slightly closing the valves on radiators that get hot very quickly, and opening more on those that lag behind. This is a delicate process that can take time, so many homeowners prefer to have an engineer carry it out.
If multiple radiators are struggling, particularly those on upper floors or at the far end of the property, there may be a circulation or pump problem. A failing pump, blocked pipework or stuck motorised valve can all restrict flow and need professional diagnosis.

When it is an emergency
A cold radiator on its own is usually inconvenient rather than dangerous, but some situations do need urgent attention. Treat any gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm as an emergency and leave the property following official advice.
If you see water spraying or pouring from a radiator, valve, pipe or boiler, or the boiler pressure drops rapidly while water is escaping, turn off the heating and, if safe, close the mains water supply. Put towels or containers under leaks to limit damage and call for help.
Unusual banging or clanking noises, a boiler that keeps locking out, or frequent loss of pressure all warrant a prompt visit from a heating engineer, even if the system is still partly working.
